Board of Directors Meeting 5 January 2016

Meeting was called to order at 7:45 pm. Gene Goldsmith laid out what decisions he felt need to be made.

  • Continue to do the same as we have done in the past. The money in the scholarship account would last about 13 or so years.
  • Spend down the fund to a zero balance when the chapter closes.
  • Move the fund to a school and let them administer it.

The Scholarship Committee (Bill Bowen, Gary Lysne and Kirk Lyon) gave their report. They interviewed three schools WWU, BTC and WCC. The committee feels that we should consider two schools at maximum.

Things to consider:

  • Choose one or two institutions
  • If we choose two then:
  1. Do we split the money between the schools and fill the endowments to the minimum per each school adding to each endowment each year?
  2. Do we split the money between the schools and add to each fund on alternating years?
  3. Do we do more fund raising to fund each endowment at the minimum now?

After much discussion about the use of the scholarship money, Ken Richardson suggested that the BOD direct the committee to:

  • Choose one school
  • Choose the amount to fund the endowment and
  • Set the perameters for the scholarship(s).

This met with general agreement.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45.

Membership Update: Jim Pace reported that by roster the chapter is #22 in the nation. We presently stand at +/- 275 members. The goal is to make 300 members. It is suggested that the membership pressure national to make the $100 life membership permanent.

Old Business:

  1. Comments on the dinner with wives was very positive. Perhaps we should look at doing another in the spring / summer.
  2. The Bottle Auction will occur Feb. 12th. Randy Elmore wants to duck his traditional duty as auctioneer – any volunteers? One bottle per couple will do the trick.
  3. A scholarship BOD meeting follows the regular meeting.
  4. 21 VASH people attended their party. The chapter donated $103 to Kathleen. It is suggested that we combine with the DAV to help furnish the apartments. The VASH dwellings are totally unfurnished.

New Business:

  1. Vietnam Welcome Home Day will occur March 30th 7:00 – 11:00 at the VFW 9301 hall at Hinote’s Corners
  2. Tom Modica presented the VVA flag and stand we donated to Chapter 1109 (Skagit).
  3. Chapter 1109 will have a picnic on August 13th. It would be nice for our members to support this function.
  4. There will be a sweetheart Dinner and Dance Feb. 13th at the Burlington Legion from 6 – 10 pm (18:00 – 22:00 for all us lifers). The cost is $50 per couple.
  5. Gene G. shared a preliminary plan for a Veterans Park in Sedro Woolley at the old Northern State Hospital grounds.

Next meeting is February 2, 2016.
