VVA165 Expands Its Scholarship Giving

In addition to the three partial college scholarships that the chapter grants each year to veterans or children of veterans, the chapter is now partially supporting a primary school in Vietnam. It is the Mạc Đỉnh Chi School near the village of An Son in Quang Nam province of Vietnam. The chapter is contributing funds to support approximately eight students for an entire calendar year. The anticipation is that the chapter will receive periodic status and grade reports on each of the students. The possible outcome may be that the chapter supports these students each year throughout their education.

This scholarship contact was made possible due to the efforts of chapter member Richard Brummett. Richard’s unit in Vietnam was largely responsible for destroying the village of An Son during the war. Since then he has visited the village and photographed many of the current inhabitants. These scholarships are a way of giving back to the current residents what their parents and grandparents may have never received. Richard will be providing photographs to the chapter of these scholarship students on his next trip to Vietnam.

This information should clearly identify that chapter 165 is the recruiter for possible new members.

Bus Passes for VASH participants was discussed by Tom Modica. It would cost the chapter about $300 per year. Further discussion was tabled because members pointed out that the Vet Center distributes bus passes and because there is a volunteer transportation program where vets can call and be picked up and driven to where they need to go.

The Agent Orange Town Hall Meeting was discussed by Bill Bowen. It is in Bellingham on September 19th between 1 and 4 PM. All chapter members are requested to attend. This is an outreach to all affected veterans and their families. Veterans with specific stories about the impact of Agent Orange on themselves and their children and grandchildren are encouraged to tell their stories. These testimonials are important because they are being collected and this output will provide support for legislation and future research. Senate Bill 1602 dealing with Agent Orange has passed and Representative Mike Honda has introduced a complementary bill in the House of Representatives. This legislation would provide treatment for affected descendants of Agent Orange veterans. Possible expenses to the chapter for the town hall meeting may run between $1,000 and $1,500. Gerry Flowers, a chapter member, who is also a commander of a Canadian Vietnam veterans group, will be participating giving the town hall an international perspective. Bill Bowen is working on getting as much advertising out to local newspapers and radio stations as possible. VVA National and Regional are providing additional support.

New Business

Buy American Products letters were discussed by Gene Goldsmith. He requested that the Secretary send buy American letters to VVA National and to Medals of America with respect to product sales by these two organizations.

The proceeds of the Emblem Fund are used by the State Governor’s Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee to fund veteran’s memorials in the State.

A New Scholarship Committee was formed by the chapter. Bill Bowen will be in charge assisted by Gene Goldsmith. Gene has the applications and candidates questions for future scholarship candidates.

Vietnam War Korean War Veterans contributed $300 to the chapter for chapter Agent Orange expenses.

A Thank You Letter from Katelyn Sherman was read by Gene Goldsmith. She was a $500 scholarship winner last month.

Next meeting is September 2nd.

Richard Brummett will supply pictures of the supported students when he is in Vietnam.
