Old Business

There will be four large trophies for $100 each and seven small trophies for $75 each. Trophy sponsors are currently being recruited. Dale Boe and Randy Turnbull each purchased a $100 sponsorship. Ed Simmers will provide approximately 150 music CD’s for sale. Any requests for songs should be given to him. Memorial Day Service was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. It will be held at Hovander Park on May 26. The pavilion is reserved. Start time is 4 PM. Ken Payne will do the food. Cakes have been ordered by Gene Goldsmith. Suggestions for speakers were discussed. Randy Elmore mentioned Richard Brummett who is thinking about it. All members are encouraged to bring a food item to the event.

Children of Vietnam was discussed by Randy Elmore. This is a charity which was established by Richard Brummett who will be at the next chapter meeting to give a slide show about the charity. Gene Goldsmith made a motion to present Brummett with a contribution of $700 after the presentation. Motion seconded and passed.

Moving the Chapter Meeting Night to Wednesday night was discussed by Tom Modica. He recommended against doing so. Further discussion ensued with no action taken.

New Business

The Northwest Annex Building was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. A veteran had inquired as to whether it made sense for a nonprofit to acquire this building when it is vacated by the county. Ken Richardson indicated that there would be substantial rehab costs in the area of $2 million. The idea of a veterans group acquiring this facility was dropped.

Snack Night is May 16th. Gene Goldsmith said that the chapter needs all members to show up.

The VVA State Convention was discussed by Bill Bowen, Gary Lysne and Jim Pace. It will be held May 17th at the Pancake House at Snoqualmie Pass. Our chapter can send three delegates. Gene Goldsmith, Ray Radke and Ed Simmers will be the chapter delegates. Greg Bremer is an alternate. Three of our chapter members will be running for state office. Gary Lysne is running for president, Jim Pace for vice president and Bill Bowen for secretary/treasurer. Jim Pace made a motion to reimburse our chapter delegates for mileage and expenses. Motion seconded and passed.

A Legislative Update was given by Gene Goldsmith. Two bills were passed by the Washington State Legislature. The first is the poacher’s bill which protects veterans and their families from unscrupulous salesmen of unneeded financial products to veterans. Second is the Medal of Honor bill which honors Washington State Medal of Honor recipients. It was also discussed that chapter members should request a military discount from stores which offer it. Local stores offering such discounts are Home Depot, Lowes, Hardware Sales and O’Riellys Auto Parts. Gene Goldsmith also suggested asking at hotels, car rental companies and restaurants which veterans frequent because these companies often offer such a discount.

The Agent Orange Town Hall Meeting was discussed by Bill Bowen. It is in Seattle this Saturday. Chapter members are invited to attend.

The Veterans Advisory Board was discussed by Gary Lysne. It will be meeting in Bellingham on September 18th. Gary will chair the function and it will serve as the WDVA town meeting.

Next meeting is June 3rd.
