Old Business

The BTC Scholarship Breakfast was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Lonnie Rose, Gene Goldsmith, Kirk Lyon and Bill Bowen attended and represented the chapter. It was a very informative and interesting program. The plaque commemorating our chapter’s endowment will be up soon. The BTC Foundation earnings on all endowment funds were 4% this past year. Our chapter’s endowment fund should now support three annual scholarships.

The Third Annual Wife/Husband/Guest Dinner will be held December 6th at the VFW Post 1585 at 625 North State Street in Bellingham. All chapter members are invited. Cost is $15 per person. Please RSVP to Gene Goldsmith at genegoldsmith@comcast.net or phone him at (360) 384-2484. There will be no meeting that night. A social hour will be from 6 to 7 PM with the dinner following at 7 PM. The chapter will need volunteers to help set up and to clean up. Members can bring food if they choose. Let Gene know if you are bringing anything. Richard Brummett will give a 10 minute slide show on the Children of Vietnam charity which the chapter supports. A brief discussion of the chapter’s scholarship fund at the BTC Foundation is also planned.

The State Council Meeting was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Although he was unable to attend this meeting, Gene provided a copy of the minutes for the chapter members to review. A copy of these State Council minutes is included in the chapter minutes book.

The DAV Forget Me Nots Sale is scheduled for Veterans Day. Please sign up with Gene Goldsmith for shift assignments in front of Haggens.

A Luncheon to Honor Gene Goldsmith was discussed by Bill Cox. The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting a free luncheon for all chapter members to honor Gene Goldsmith for his many service activities in helping local veterans. It will be held Saturday, November 12th at 12:30 PM. The location is the Elks Lodge (lower level) on Sammish Way in Bellingham. Bill distributed a signup sheet for members who want to attend. Bill also will also send an email to Gene Goldsmith who will in turn forward this invitation to all chapter members.

New Business

The BTC Foundation Memorial for Gary Lysne was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Ken Richardson is collecting contributions which will be given to the BTC Foundation as a donation by the chapter in honor of Gary. Ken will make a list of all donors and give it to the Lysne family.

The February Bottle Auction will be discussed at the January meeting.

The VASH Christmas Party was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. The VASH program is in conjunction with the local Opportunity Council and the mission is to assist veterans with subsidized housing. Currently there are about 45 VASH participants. If you want to attend the party on December 13th, see Gene for additional information. Gift cards have been the gifts to the VASH participants in prior years.

Next meeting is December 6, 2016.  Social hour will begin at 6 PM with dinner at 7 PM. Spouses and guests are invited. There will be no formal meeting.

Good of the Order

First, Gene Goldsmith reminded the members to check their VFW monthly calendar for upcoming events.

Second, Duane Holliday is selling Vietnam Veteran hats for $15 each after the meeting.

Third, Bill Wilcox requested that members consider volunteering to be drivers for the DAV van.

Fourth, Gene Goldsmith has VVA business cards and VVA membership applications to give out to members who may need them for recruitment or for other chapter business.

Fifth, Ken Richardson said that if any members are not getting the monthly VFW calendar of events, give your name and email address to Bill Cox. He will forward your information to the VFW adjutant so that you may be added to the VFW distribution list.

Sixth, Ken Richardson and Gene Goldsmith discussed our annual contribution to the VFW for miscellaneous items including use of the VFW facilities. A motion was made to contribute $500 to the VFW for the chapter’s annual contribution. Motion seconded and passed.

Seventh, Gene Goldsmith and Ken Richardson discussed that the chapter has made a $2,500 deposit for improvement to the VFW kitchen. That project is on hold until the VFW determines whether the kitchen remodel or improving access to the ground floor for wheel chair bound and disabled people is most important.

Eighth, Randy Elmore described the memorial service for Gary Lysne which Randy and many other chapter members attended. It was very well done. Jim Pace gave a eulogy discussing Gary’s many service projects for veterans. The Seattle Police Department Honor Guards gave a presentation and retrieval of colors. There was also a presentation of the flag and taps by VFW Post 9301. There was also a 21 gun salute from the American Legion Post 7. The entire proceeding was very moving and a tribute to the importance of Gary Lysne.

Ninth, Dave Loomis has a Car Show plaque for Les Schwab that needs to be delivered to them.

Motion to adjourn meeting at @ 7:35 PM. Motion seconded and passed. The meeting was adjourned by Gene Goldsmith.
