Treasurer’s April report was read by Ken Richardson. The report was approved as read.

Membership Update was given by Gene Goldsmith. The chapter currently has approximately 272 members plus 10 members who are late in renewing their memberships. Gene Goldsmith will be contacting those 10 members to update their membership.

Old Business

A Jim Pace and Bill Bowen Update was given by Gene Goldsmith. Jim Pace was hospitalized following back surgery but has just returned home. His suspension appeal with VVA National is ongoing but is a slow process. Bill Bowen has quit the VVA because of the suspension of Jim Pace as well as the negative treatment from VVA National that Bill has received. Gene Goldsmith will speak with Bill Bowen about rejoining the VVA and chapter activities.

Car Show Update was discussed by Tom Modica and Dale Boe. It will be held July 24th from 10AM to 2PM at the K-Mart parking lot off Sunset in Bellingham. Dale is working on trophies. Per Tom all planning is moving forward on schedule. Gene Goldsmith mentioned that we may be approaching 200 cars this year and that next year we may need a larger venue due to the car show popularity.

Memorial Day was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Memorial Day services will be held by our chapter at Hovander Park at 4PM. If rain, the location will be the pavilion. If sunny, it will be at the Rock about 100 yards from the Pavilion. Some of the main participants will be Dr. Lisa Kirk Brown, the guest speaker. Jim Neyens will give the benediction. Riggs Nelson will do taps. Ron Hardesty will sing. Ira Urhig will play bagpipes. Jim Stilts will read the names of the fallen. Two cakes and baked beans have been approved. Members and guests will bring food in a pot luck format. The chapter has authorized Ken Payne to spend $1,000 for food and cooking supplies. Chapter members involved in set up will meet at the VFW at 9AM on Memorial Day. Assignments and responsibilities for set up and shut down were reviewed. Ken Richardson reviewed the time and place of other Memorial Day services throughout the county.

New Business

The VVA State Council Meeting was discussed by Gene Goldsmith and Bill Wilcox who were the two chapter delegates in attendance. In general, the meeting went very poorly. New bylaws and a constitution were adopted whereas the existence of the prior bylaws and constitution were ignored. No treasurer’s report or secretarial minutes were reviewed despite their existence. Other problems were discussed. The general conclusion of the chapter was to let the State Council pursue their agenda until it fails and requires assistance. At that point our chapter can become active again.

The Veterans Service Account and veterans financial assistance was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Duane Moore is a 50 year old Marine who lost his job. He was offered a job on a cruise ship but needed an expedited passport in order to be accepted for the job. The passport cost $195 but the veteran didn’t have the money. Gene Goldsmith met with the veteran and determined that he was deserving of our assistance. Gene gave the veteran a personal check. Motion was made to reimburse Gene for the $195. Motion seconded and passed.

The Children of Vietnam charity was discussed by Richard Brummett. He visited the school in Vietnam and took pictures of the Chocolate Day celebration. Richard presented these pictures in a slide show presentation to the membership. Some of the things presented included a Bigfoot race in which the children participated. The chocolate celebration involved an 11 pound piece of chocolate the children shared as well as some chocolate ice cream. A good time was had by all both at the chocolate celebration and by the members in watching the slide show.

Next meeting is June 7, 2016.  Dinner will be at 6:00PM. The meeting will be at 7:00PM.

Good of the Order

First, Gene Goldsmith reminded the members to check their VFW monthly calendar for upcoming events.

Second, Gene Goldsmith informed members that the VA will pay for a life alert system for veterans who are enrolled in the VA health care system and where a doctor prescribes a life alert system. See Gene for more details.

Third, Tom Modica reminded the members that he collects spent cartridges for printers as well as cell phones. He turns them in and the chapter gets paid for them. Bring said items to Tom at future meetings.

Motion to adjourn meeting at 8:05 PM. Motion seconded and passed. The meeting was adjourned by Gene Goldsmith.
