March 1st minutes

Vietnam Veterans of America

Ron Davenport Memorial Chapter 165

Minutes of Meeting 1 March 2016

This was a “special” meeting as it occurred in two phases. While waiting for dinner, we discussed old business and some new business. The first phase meeting started about 18:15.

Old Business:

  1. There is a Vietnam Welcome Home Day, Wednesday March 30 at the VFW with breakfast starting at 7:30, going to 11:00 am.
  2. A car show update was presented by Tom Modica and Dale Boe. Dale has a great idea of using pistons for trophies. The date of the show is July 24 (the fourth Sunday of a five Sunday month.)
  3. Kirk Lyon gave a report on the scholarship endowment and went through a couple of the criteria that will be used to evaluate candidates.
  4. The Memorial Day ceremony actually falls on Memorial Day this year. $1000 will be used to set up and carry it off. Moved by Richard M, second by Dave Loomis – motion carried.

New Business:

  1. 2019 VVA national convention will be in Spokane July 16-19th. A motion to create and fund a delegate support fund (from car show proceeds and other fund raising). We are aiming for 14 delegates to attend. Moved by Ken R. second by Tom G – motion carried.
  2. Gene Goldsmith stopped by the Veteran’s Museum in Chehalis and reported that it is well worth your while to visit.
  3. March 22nd is the date for the WWU Veteran’s summit, a meeting to learn how to increase veterans’ services in Whatcom County.
  4. For the bad of the order the VA doesn’t support research into veterans’ issues. What the hell are they there for? (editorial comment).
  5. Joel Douglas shared with Gene a newspaper clipping about a veteran in Carpenteria, CA who won the right for all veterans to open a sidewalk shop in the great state of CA.
  6. It was decided to invite wives and/or main squeezes to the meeting 5 April 2016. (Officer Induction).
  7. Tom Modica asked for $300 from the service fund for VASH bus vouchers. After some discussion moved by Tom ?? second by Lonnie R. motion carried.
  8. Randy E. reported on the fund raiser for Lauren, a former VFW bartender.

Then the meeting was suspended and we ate.

Back to New Business:

  1. Jim Pace has been blackballed by a few members at national. There was a tale of skullduggery etc. and if you want the full scoop, talk to Jim. The chapter signed a letter of support for Jim (drafted by Gene) that will go to the officers at national and all the board members.
  2. There was a motion to retain all present officers for the 2016-2017 year. Unanimous ballot to retain.

Good of the Order: a. Check VFW calendar

  1. The Lynden Museum will hold a fund raiser featuring WW1. It is 23 April 2016 at 17:00 (5:00 pm) at the museum.
