Secretary’s Report

Minutes were handed out, read by members and accepted.

Treasurer Report

Report was read and accepted. Ed Simmers moved and Bill Bowen seconded.

Membership Report

Jim Pace sent a letter to Vietnam and Vietnam era vets who have come through the veteran service office at one time or another letting them know that a Vietnam Veterans of America chapter exists in the area and inviting them to join. One hundred and thirty letters were sent out and another 600 remain to be sent. As a result, we have gained a new member and one of our guests tonight was interested enough to attend.

We have about 160 members and for each 25 members we are entitled to 1 state delegate. So currently we have 6 delegates and we reach 175 members we will gain one more for a total of 7.

There are 77,000 members nationwide. Our chapter has seven Canadian members.

Chapter elections will be held on April 7th and board member Randy Elmore made a pitch for members to step forward. All executive board positions, president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary are open and a special need exists for a new treasurer. Three board of director positions are up for grabs. None of these require a great deal of work and newly elected office holders will not be abandoned by the office holders they replace. After all, our motto is “Vets Helping Vets”. For too long the same members have been recycled around and around to different offices. Others need to step up.

Randy Turnbull (phone 360-319-4907) is Nominating Committee chairman. Consider what is responsible and call him.

It was also suggested that an election email be sent to the membership speaking to this topic. Elmore agreed to do this.

Old Business

Children of Vietnam- For most of the past year, the chapter has supported a program that pays tuition, buys a school desk and buys a bicycle for children who live more than two miles from their school and allows rural children to attend school. Chapter spent $850 for a year. It was brought up as to whether or not we would commit to doing this annually. Ed Simmer moved that we invite member Richard Brummett, who works with program every year when he goes back to Vietnam, to our next meeting for an update. Randy Elmore seconded. Continued funding  will be taken up at that meeting.

New Business

Jim Pace is seeking re-election to the National Board of Directors At Large of Vietnam Veterans of America. He was elected two years ago and serves on the National Finance Committee, is Vice-Chairman of the National Benefits Committee and serves on the National Membership Committee. He handles these jobs and is also the Senior Service Officer two days a week at the Bellingham Vet Center.

Campaigns cost money. His last election cost over $500 and donations covered most of it. Brochures and postage are essential and he asked for our help. Those in attendance past the hat.

Snack night will be Friday, January 9th at 6pm.

Good of the Order

Tom Darling reported that Lynden VFW Post 9301 serving breakfast the third Saturday of each month, 8-11am. Price is $6.00.

Ken Richardson reminded us that we have contributed $500 annually to the VFW in lieu of rent and the Post could certainly use that donation. Tom Darling moved and Randy Elmore seconded that $500 go to the Post. It passed.

Bill Bowen asked about the VFW Kitchen Remodel Fund which VVA#165 has contributed to. Currently there is approximately $21,000 in a special reserve account, not being used for any other purpose, until enough money is raised to begin the project. Major infrastructure work needs to be done in the kitchen area.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.

Secretary’s November minutes read and accepted. Ray Radke moved, Bill Bowen seconded.

Treasurer’s November report was read by Tom Modica. Report was read and accepted. Ray Radke moved and John Forgette seconded. Treasurer Modica stated that he is having a difficult time learning the new Quicken accounting software. Doesn’t feel as he is understanding it. Tom believes it might be best if a new Treasurer was elected next April. Several members present said that they had confidence in Tom.

Membership Report by Jim Pace. 160 members currently which allows the chapter to have six delegates. The chapter is growing and the hope is that it will continue. Chapter member George Dusenberry passed away earlier this year and left a lot of bass fishing gear. Pace is buying the gear for $260 and George’s widow has agreed that the money be put into a fund administered by Pace to buy VVA memberships for veterans who are not able to purchase their own. Members in attendance thought it was a good idea.

Old Business-Kirk Lyon suggested that an email be sent out before each meeting telling members what is on the menu for the pre-meeting dinner, what is on the agenda for the meeting. Felt it would increase attendance. It was decided to try it monthly for six months and see what happens.

Bottle Auction-Auction will be held February 13 in conjunction with snack night. Dinner will begin at 6pm and the auction will commence at 7:30. Randy Elmore, Kirk Lyon and the handsome Richard Martinez will host. Bring a beautifully wrapped bottle of something; olive oil, wine, liquor, perfume, etc. and a gaily wrapped bottle of something else M&M’s, nails, dimes, dollar bills, etc., and both cloaked so no one can tell what is inside. Bring them into the event, set them on the table and once on the table, no one can touch them other than the auctioneer and his helpers. Container will be sold to the highest bidder and the lucky recipient will open immediately for all to see. Proceeds go to the chapter general fund.

VASH Christmas Party will be held Tuesday, December 16 from 11am to 1pm.

DAV says thank you to all the chapter members who helped out with the highly successful Forget-Me-Not campaign.

New Business-Snack night will be Friday, January 9, 2015 at 6pm. It is important that chapter members attend.

There will be a public hearing dealing with discounted bus fare for veterans and active duty service members in the county council chambers, Thursday, December 11 at 8am.

December snack night will be here at the post on the 19th at 6pm.

Good of the Order-The school program that the chapter supported last year needs to be revisited to decide whether we will continue to fund annually.

Their seems to be some turmoil at the VVA state council level and it may require a special meeting in January to resolve it.

Board member Richard Martinez suggested that so many veterans are homeless or have dependency problems we might consider getting involved with the Lighthouse Mission as a chapter.

Next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 6th.

There being no further business, meeting was adjourned at 7:40pm.
