Secretary’s October minutes were reviewed prior to the meeting by the membership. Minutes were approved as drafted.

Treasurer’s October report was read by Tom Modica. The report was approved as read and the report is attached. Bill Cox commented that the format was an improvement over recent reports. Ray Radke agreed and proposed that this format be continued. Motion seconded and passed.

Membership Update was given by Jim Pace. The chapter currently has 155 members. This gives the chapter six votes now on state voting matters, not the four as previously discussed.

 

Old Business

 

 The Service Account was discussed by Gene Goldsmith. He spent $146.21 for Tom Tucker’s water bill. Tom is a veteran whose wife left him and who also took all his cash. These funds prevented his water from being turned off.

The Bottle Auction was discussed by Randy Elmore. This year Kirk Lyon and Randy will coordinate. Beverly will do the poster. Randy will be master of ceremonies assisted by Kirk. Discussion ensued and the time for the event will be tentatively set for Friday the 13th in February. The Bottle Auction is to be paired with snack night in order to possibly increase attendance.

Volunteers for Veterans Day are needed for certain times in front of grocery stores to sell Forget-Me-Nots. This effort is to raise money for the DAV. Gene Goldsmith discussed the needed times and requested interested members to see him after the meeting.

Freebies for Veterans Day were discussed by Gene Goldsmith. Some of the major local ones are Applebee’s free meal, Olive Garden free meal, Denny’s all you can eat pancakes and Starbucks free coffee. Other items discussed were a veteran’s dinner on November 10 at the Elks Club, the VFW being open all day with food available and a parade in Burlington.

VASH Bus Pass Update was given by Tom Modica. Four VASH vets currently have bus passes.

 

New Business

 

Snack Night will be November 21st at 6 PM at the VFW Hall. Better attendance by the membership at snack night is important. All members are encouraged to attend.

Congressman Rick Larsen will be at the American Legion on November 7th between 2 and 3 PM. He will be available to answer questions.

The VA Mobile Van will be at the Silver Reef Casino from November 17 through November 21st from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through Thursday and from 9 AM to 12 PM on Friday. Jim Pace said that service officers will be present to provide information and assistance. A legislative update was give by Gene Goldsmith. He mentioned that the Senate bill “Putting Veteran Funding First Act” will be voted upon this month in the Senate. There is a related bill also in the House of Representatives.

The Chapter Delegate Count was discussed. Based upon current membership the chapter delegate count is six with two alternates. Discussion ensued and the six delegates nominated were Gene Goldsmith, Gary Lysne, Ed Simmers, Ken Richardson, Tom Darling and David Scattum. The two alternates nominated were Dave Loomis and Bill Wilcox. A motion was made to accept this slate of delegates and alternates. The motion was seconded and passed. Bill Cox was directed to send this updated list of delegates and alternates to both National VVA and the State VVA Council.

A Ferndale Boy Scout Troop was discussed by Jim Pace. The troop needs $70 in order to send candy bars to active military personnel. A motion was made to donate $70 to the troop. The motion was seconded and the motion passed.

Next meeting is December 2, 2014.

 

Good of the Order

 

First, Gene Goldsmith requested that all members check their VFW calendars for events. Get on John Ferdon’s email list if you are not receiving it.

Second, Randy Elmore reminded the membership that chapter elections will be held next April. Members were requested to think about running for a Board or Officer’s position.

Third, Tom Modica mentioned that John Oakley Michaels, a Vietnam veteran, passed away. A service will be held at Greenacres Memorial Park on November 5th at 1 PM.

Fourth, Tom Darling mentioned that every third Saturday between 8 and 11 AM there is a breakfast at the Lynden VFW.
